In the  evening of June 7, 2002, Mario S. Peralta was visiting a friend at the Saratoga Housing complex. Peralta was working on the car of a woman who was also visiting at the complex. The 31 year old boyfriend of the woman approached Peralta and advised him to stop working on the car, that they were going to have a mechanic repair the car. Peralta closed the hood of the car and walked over to the boyfriend and suddenly stabbed him in the left side of his nose, near his eye, with a screwdriver he had been holding. Peralta then ran to a car he had driven to the complex, and fled the scene.

A subsequent investigation by the Binghamton Police Department identified Mario S. Peralta as the assailant in this incident. The victim of the attack survived his wounds.
