Kentucky Fried Chicken, Grand Larceny

In September of 2001, the Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurant at 165 Robinson Street, Binghamton, New York, underwent a major remodeling. As a part of that undertaking, a life size replica of " Colonel Sanders" was installed in front of the Store. Colonel Sanders is actually Harland David Sanders, who, in 1932, at the age of 42, founded the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant chain in Corbin, Kentucky.

The statue soon became a popular part of the neighborhood, with people frequently posing for snapshots while sitting on the bench next to the Colonel, and passing children often stopping for a visit with what grew to be their friend. In an effort to avoid the statue from being vandalized or stolen, it was routinely taken in each night when the store closed.

On Tuesday, November 5, 2002, for the first time ever, employees forgot to bring the statue inside at the 10:00 PM closing time. Sometime during the night, and prior to 8:30 AM the next morning, the statue was stolen. The statue was taken by removing two wing nuts from bolts which held it to a permanently installed wooden bench and then lifting it from it’s position on the seat.

The statue is made entirely of plastic and weighs approximately 40 pounds. The inflexible effigy poses Colonel Sanders in a seated position, with his left arm extended horizontally and his right leg crossed over his left leg. The statue is done almost entirely in white, with the exception of a bowtie, cane and pair of shoes which are all black. The image is 4 feet in height, 5 feet wide and 4 feet deep.

The statue is valued at $2,500.00.

Binghamton Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1000.00 for information which leads to the arrest and indictment of the individual(s) responsible for these crimes.
