Binghamton Main Street Robbery

On Tuesday, September 2, 2003, a robbery occurred on the west side of Binghamton, New York. At about 2:45 PM, on that date, a 79 year old Binghamton woman walked to the BSB Bank, 273 Main Street, and cashed her pension check. After leaving the bank, the woman began walking west on Main Street. When she reached the area of the Speed Queen Laundromat, 300 Main Street, she was approached from behind by a male. The male suddenly grabbed hold of the woman’s purse and attempted to forcibly take it from her. After a very brief struggle, the male was able to wrest the purse from the woman. He then threw the woman to the ground and fled on foot, with the purse, running east on Main Street.

A 27 year old Whitney Point, New York man was doing laundry in the Laundromat at the time of this incident. After realizing that a robbery had just occurred, he immediately began a foot pursuit of the fleeing suspect. The man chased the suspect north on Matthews Street and then east on Brown Street. The suspect was able to elude his pursuer on Brown Street.

The woman suffered several injuries in this attack. The middle finger of her right hand was dislocated, her left hand was fractured and she received a number of abrasions and bruises. She was taken to Wilson Hospital, Johnson City, for treatment.

Taken in the woman’s purse was an undisclosed amount of cash, several credit cards, keys and personal papers.

The suspect is described as a white male, age in his late teens, thin build, light colored facial hair, wearing a white baseball cap on backwards and a short sleeve white t-shirt.

Binghamton Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1000.00 for information which leads to the arrest and indictment of the individual(s) responsible for these crimes.
