Binghamton Plaza 5 Robbery

On Tuesday, September 2, 2003, a robbery occurred on the south side of Binghamton, New York. At about 6:07 PM on that date, a 42 year old Conklin, New York woman was dining and shopping in the Plaza 5 area. While at the corner of Vestal Avenue and Mitchell Avenue, the woman met up with a 73 year old Binghamton woman who was also shopping in the area. While the two were standing and talking on the southwest corner of that intersection, a man walked by them and then stepped behind the Conklin woman. The man suddenly ripped the Conklin woman’s purse from her shoulder, ripping the strap as he did so. He then began running, with the purse, east on Vestal Avenue. The Conklin woman immediately began a foot pursuit of the fleeing suspect. She chased the man for over three blocks east, and finally lost sight of him in the area of New Street and Route 434. He was last seen still running east from New Street.

The woman flagged down a passing Police car and reported the robbery.

There were no injuries in this incident.

Taken in the woman’s purse was an undisclosed amount of cash, credit cards and numerous personal items.

The suspect is described as a white male, heavy set, 5’10" to 6’0" tall, 200 to 220 pounds in weight, wearing a cream colored jacket with a turquoise stripe in it, cream colored khaki pants and a tan baseball cap.

Binghamton Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1000.00 for information which leads to the arrest and indictment of the individual(s) responsible for these crimes.
