Forgery/Larceny On Monday, July 7, 2003, an official of a downtown Binghamton, New York church, for a legitimate reason, wrote out a check made payable to a reputable local business The check, written on the churchs banking account, was made out for over $2,000.00. After the check was written, it was placed in an envelope addressed to the business, and left in an outgoing mail bin at the church. On Monday, November 3, 2003, the church official called Binghamton Police to report that the check had apparently been stolen and forged. The subsequent investigation by Police Detectives revealed that the theft was discovered when the business advised the church that they had never received the check. When the church followed up with its bank, they discovered that the check had been cashed. Detectives learned that the check had been cashed on Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at the Drive-Up of Horizons Credit Union, 120 Main Street, Binghamton. The name of the business had been handwritten on the back of the check, endorsing it. Additionally, a mans signature appeared below the company endorsement A review of the Drive Ups video surveillance tapes shows a woman in a car submitting the check at the time it was cashed. The woman appears to be an older white female, with light colored hair, wearing eyeglasses. She has on a purple top. The car appears to be a small red car, possibly a Chevrolet, with what appears to be a New York State license plate on the front. Binghamton Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1000.00 for information which leads to the arrest and indictment of the individual(s) responsible for these crimes. |
