Alaska Market Attempted Armed Robbery, Binghamton, NY

On Monday, November 15, 2003, an attempted armed robbery occurred at the Alaska Market, 254 Chenango Street, Binghamton, New York. At about 9:45 PM on that date, a female employee was working at a cash register inside the store when a man walked into the business through the front door. The man walked back to the dairy cooler, which is located in the rear of the store, and removed a container of milk. He then walked up to the female employee at the cash register and placed the milk on the counter there. Suddenly, the man produced a large knife and ordered the employee to give him all the money in the cash drawer. The employee refused to give the man any money and told him that he had better leave the store or she would call the Police. She then picked up the telephone and began dialing the Binghamton Police number. At this point, the man ran from the store, taking the knife with him, but leaving the milk on the counter. He was last seen running northwest towards Prospect Avenue. The employee completed dialing the number and reported the attempted robbery. Police responded immediately to the scene but were unable to locate the man.

No one was injured in this incident and the man was unsuccessful in obtaining any money.

The suspect is described as a dark skinned white male, possibly Hispanic, age in his 30’s, wearing a white jacket, dark jeans and a dark baseball style cap.

The knife is described as a fixed blade, hunting style, approximately 1 foot long, with a silver blade and a black handle.

Binghamton Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1000.00 for information which leads to the arrest and indictment of the individual(s) responsible for these crimes.
