On Friday, January 2, 2004, a larceny occurred on the south side of Binghamton, New York. In the evening hours of that date, a lone female clerk was working at the Quickway Store, located at 306 Conklin Avenue. At about 8:30 PM, the clerk put together a cash drop deposit envelope at a moment when no one was in the store. She put the deposit down behind the counter when some customers walked into the store. One of the customers, a man, walked over to the register and asked the clerk for cigarettes. The clerk had to turn her back to the man in order to get the cigarettes he asked for. Retrieving the cigarettes, she placed them in a bag and handed them to the man. The man asked if he could have a larger bag so the clerk once again turned her back to the man as she honored his request. The man then paid for the cigarettes and left the store without further incident. A while later in the evening, the clerk realized that the cash deposit envelope was not where she thought it was supposed to be. Because the clerk could not remember whether or not she had actually made the drop, she began searching for the envelope. Not finding the envelope, the clerk assumed that she must have already made the drop. She finished out her shift without further incident. The following morning, a Store management official discovered that the clerks total cash deposit for sales during her shift was short $150.00, the amount that was in the missing drop envelope. A review of the stores security surveillance tape that recorded the clerks shift revealed that a theft had occurred. The theft occurred when the clerk turned her back to the man that bought the cigarettes, to get him the larger bag that he had requested. While the clerk had her back to him, the man leaned over the counter and grabbed the envelope containing the cash drop. When the clerk turned back around, she had no idea of what had just occurred. The suspect in this case is described as a black male, age in late teens to mid twenties, approximately 510" to 60", medium build, mustache, Wearing gray or white hooded sweatshirt with lettering on the front, dark outer coat, medium colored stocking cap with dark horizontal stripes. Binghamton Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1000.00 for information which leads to the arrest and indictment of the individual(s) responsible for these crimes. |
