City of Binghamton & Otsego County Larcenies

In May of 2004, the Chicago Construction Company of Endicott, New York was engaged in contract work for the City of Binghamton, New York, replacing catch basins on State Street. On Friday, May 28, 2004, at 4:00 PM, the Contractor parked the company equipment in the parking lot of the Binghamton Plaza, 33 West State Street, near the job site, for the extended holiday weekend. On Memorial Day, the following Monday, a company employee drove past the equipment at 5:00 PM, noting that it was fine. The following morning, Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at 7:00 AM, the company owner arrived at the Plaza, only to discover that all the equipment was gone, apparently stolen. He notified the Binghamton Police, who initiated an investigation into the matter.

The subsequent investigation revealed that the owner had parked a dump truck with a trailer attached to it. On the trailer were two pieces of equipment, an excavator and a loader. The keys to the truck were removed by the owner.

The dump truck is a 1993 Chevrolet, white cab with red box, 10 wheels, New York registration 65923JD. The truck was loaded with 15 tons of #1 crushed stone (pea stone) which is valued at $200.00. The truck itself is valued at $25,000.

The trailer is a 2003 Eager Beaver construction trailer, red with white lettering, Maine registration 09-56310. It is valued at $14,500.

The excavator is a 1993 Hitachi, with a 24 inch wide bucket, reddish orange in color, no plates attached. The value of this piece of equipment is $30,000.

The loader is a New Holland skid steer, (bobcat style machine), yellow and black in color. No plates were attached to it. It is valued at $25,000.

On Monday, June 7, 2004, the dump truck was located parked in the Fifth Precinct of Suffolk County, New York. The load of stones was still intact, but the trailer and equipment were gone. The thief(s) had broken the steering column and "hot wired" the ignition to start the vehicle.

Additionally, on June 8, 2004, a 1999 John Deere compact tractor with backhoe and loader, color green and yellow, serial number 524437, valued at $28,000 was stolen from property on Evening Inn Road in the Town of Milford, near Oneonta, New York. The Otsego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating that theft.

The owner of the Chicago Construction Company is offering a $2,500.00 reward for information which leads to the arrest of those responsible.

Binghamton Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1000.00 for information which leads to the arrest and indictment of the individual(s) responsible for these crimes.
