On Thursday, May 6, 2004, an assault took place on the East Side of Binghamton, New York. At about 4:00 PM on that date, the 37 year old owner of the Angle Market, 210 Court Street, was working alone, waiting on customers at the cash register. A man came to the area where the owner was working and placed some merchandise on the counter, as if he intended to purchase it. The man then told the owner that because he (the owner) was Muslim, he should give a discount on the merchandise. The owner advised him that he was not Muslim, and that discounts were never given at the store. With that, the man told the owner that he did not want the merchandise. The owner picked up the merchandise and walked out from behind the counter to return the item to the shelf from which it came. As the owner arrived at the area on the sales floor where the merchandise was to be returned, the man suddenly approached him and punched him in the throat. In pain and coughing from the blow, the owner retreated back behind the sales counter and picked up a telephone, apparently to call Police. At that point another customer walked into the store and so the man fled the scene. Binghamton Police responded to the store but were unable to locate the suspect. The subsequent investigation revealed that the entire incident was caught on video surveillance, and images of the suspect have been produced. Additionally, the owner stated that the suspect is a frequent visitor to the store and may live in the area. The video indicates that there were two black males who entered the store with the suspect. These two individuals appear to be with the suspect and remain in the store throughout the incident. They also exit the store with the suspect. The victim, in pain and coughing, said he was going to respond to the Hospital for medical care. The suspect is described as a light skinned black or Hispanic male, approximately 510" tall, 150 to 170 pounds, wearing an oversized white t-shirt that drapes down almost to his knees, dark pants and white baseball cap. It appears that the other two individuals that were with the suspect were also both wearing white caps. Binghamton Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1000.00 for information which leads to the arrest and indictment of the individual(s) responsible for these crimes. |
