U-Save Auto Rental, Binghamton, NY

On Thursday, July 22, 2004, the Office Manager of  U-Save Auto Rental, 339 Front Street, Binghamton, New York, was reviewing financial documents, when she came across a cancelled check that appeared to be illegitimate. Upon closer inspection, the Manager discovered that the check was counterfeit, and the signature on it was forged. Binghamton Police were summoned to the business and an initial report was taken,

The subsequent investigation revealed that the instrument was indeed counterfeit, a close replica to an actual check that is used by the business. A signature of an authorized company financial officer was forged on the face of the check.

The check was made payable to Jamel P. Barnett in the amount of $989.00. That signature appeared on the rear of the check, endorsing it.

The investigation further revealed that the check was cashed in the morning of Thursday, June 3, 2004, at the BSB Bank, (now Partner’s Trust) main office located at 58 Exchange Street, Binghamton. A video of the actual transaction was obtained from surveillance camera footage. The individual who presented the check produced a Connecticut ID card, which identified himself as Jamel P. Barnett from Stamford, Connecticut, age 22. He appears to be a black male, wearing eyeglasses, very short hair with balding, receding hairline, wearing a black top with black and white symbols on the front.

A picture of the man cashing the check has been developed from the surveillance video.

Binghamton Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1000.00 for information which leads to the arrest and indictment of the individual(s) responsible for these crimes.
