Broad Avenue Construction Larceny

In early September of 2004, a Grand Larceny occurred on the East Side of Binghamton, New York.

The Cardona Construction Company of Schenectady, New York, was hired by the Vacri Construction Company of Binghamton as a sub contractor in the on going Court Street Construction Project. Cardona Construction was to supply and install the various street signs that were required in the job’s specifications. The company set up a local base of operations on Broad Avenue, in an area on the west side of the street, underneath the Route 81 / 17 overpass. Vehicles and equipment used by the company worked from this area on a daily basis. New signs that were to be installed along the construction route, and  the supplies necessary to set them in place were also stockpiled at this location.

On the morning of  Friday, September 3, 2004, company crews met at this location to prepare for the days work. The last employees to leave the area and proceed to the job site on Court Street did so at about 7:00 AM. At that time, all signs and stockpiled items were on hand in the storage area. When employees returned to the Broad Avenue location at noon, they discovered that a large number of new signs had been stolen from the storage area. Binghamton Police were notified and responded to the scene to initiate a report of the theft.

The subsequent investigation revealed that 23 signs in all were taken. Valued at about $1,750.00, the signs consisted of nine different types of traffic controls and indicators, including stop, speed limit, no parking and green arrow among them. All of the signs were conventional size, color and shape that motorists are accustomed to. They had been equipped with Z-bar, which is an aluminum support that anchors a sign to a sign-post.

Along with specific suspect information, Investigators would also be interested in any observations of suspicious activity and individuals that motorists and pedestrians on Broad Avenue may have made on that morning.

Binghamton Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1000.00 for information which leads to the arrest and indictment of the individual(s) responsible for these crimes.
