Giant Market Quick Change Scam

On October 10, 2004, a “Quick Change Scam” occurred on the East Side of Binghamton, New York. In the early afternoon of that date, a young, female was working her shift at the Giant Market, 160 Robinson Street, as the cashier for the store’s “Express Lane”. At about 12:50 PM, a man and woman came to the cashier with a single item, a frozen pizza. The man handed the cashier a one hundred dollar bill to pay for the pizza. After receiving change, the man then asked if he could pay for the pizza with another denomination bill, and so the scam began. With quick and continual requests for changing other bills, the cashier soon became confused and lost track of the money being exchanged. Following a number of such transactions, the couple left the store, leaving the cashier unaware that a theft had just occurred. A short while later, the cashier became suspicious of what had transpired with the couple, and she contacted her Supervisor. The cashier’s money drawer was counted, and it was found to be short by almost two hundred dollars. Binghamton Police were notified and they responded to the store to initiate an investigation. The couple responsible for the theft are described as follows: White male, age in 40’s, dark graying hair, mustache and possible goatee, 5’10” tall, heavy build, wearing a dark colored coat and dark pants. White female, age in mid 40’s, long grayish brown hair, scraggly in appearance, tall with a thin build, wearing big eyeglasses, dark shirt, jacket, jeans and white sneakers. The couple was recorded on store security surveillance cameras, and pictures of them have been developed and are presented with this case.

Binghamton Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1000.00 for information which leads to the arrest and indictment of the individual(s) responsible for these crimes.
