BPD Walnut Street Larceny & Burglary

In March of 2005, a Gypsy type scam occurred on the west side of Binghamton, New York. In the early afternoon of Thursday, March 10, 2005, an elderly female was unloading groceries from her car, which was parked in front of her Walnut Street apartment building. While unloading the car, she was approached by a younger woman. The younger woman stated that her Mother had recently died and that she needed to use a telephone. She then asked for permission to use the elderly woman’s telephone. Agreeing to the request, the elderly female took the suppliant into her apartment.

Once inside, the younger female asked if she could have a drink of water. In order to accommodate the request, the elderly female had to momentarily leave the room that the two were standing in. As she did so, the elderly woman left her purse and wallet unattended in the room.

A short while later the younger female left the apartment. It wasn’t until later that the elderly female discovered that cash had been stolen from her wallet. She contacted Binghamton Police and an investigation into the theft was initiated.

This elderly woman was the victim of a burglary, which occurred at this same apartment, sometime overnight from December 10, 2004 to December 11, 2004. In that incident, an intruder entered the apartment through an unlocked door, and stole an undisclosed amount of cash. That burglary remains under investigation at this time.
The suspect in the March 10 scam is described as a white female, age in 30’s, 5’6”, average build, dark hair, light complexion wearing a dark coat.

Binghamton Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1000.00 for information which leads to the arrest and indictment of the individual(s) responsible for these crimes.
