In early December of 2004, a larceny occurred in the center city area of Binghamton, New York. On Wednesday, December 1, 2004, a NYSEG crew was working in the vicinity of the intersection of Lewis Street with State Street. The crew was set up in the rear of the parking lot which is located on the northwest corner of State and Lewis, opposite the 229 State Street Office Building which houses the Broome County Public Defender’s office. NYSEG was replacing wiring which ran from a manhole in Lewis Street, to lighting in the parking lot by the Sherwin Williams Paint Store, 3 Lewis Street. At about 5:50 PM, the crew stopped work for the day. Four coils of copper wire which had been replaced by new wire, were left at the job site, bound to a light pole and surrounded by cones. The coils were to be removed the following day by the crew. At 9:00 AM the following morning, Thursday, December 2, 2004, the crew returned to the job site. Upon arrival, members of the crew discovered that the four coils of copper wire had been stolen sometime overnight. Binghamton Police were notified and an investigation into the theft was initiated. Because of the weight and bulk of the four coils, it is very likely that a truck or vehicle was used to transport the stolen property from the job site. It is very likely that the thief or thieves will attempt to sell the copper at a recycling center rather than use it for anything. Each of the four coils is described as 320 feet of rolled copper wire, tied to keep it from unraveling, 500 mcm wire, 3 feet in diameter, 132 pounds in weight. The total weight of the four copper coils is 528 pounds, and is valued at up to $3,200.00. |
