BPD 12-27-04 Cab Robbery

In the early morning hours of Monday, December 27, 2004, an armed robbery occurred in downtown Binghamton. At about 1:40 AM on that date, a Courtesy Cab was parked in the lot of the company’s offices at 210 Court Street. A female cab driver was sitting inside the vehicle, counting the fares she had collected to that point of her shift. As she counted, a man approached on foot and came up to the window of the cab. The man asked the driver if she had a cigarette. When the driver responded that she did not have a cigarette, the man began to walk away.
The man walked a short distance and then turned around and walked back over to the cab. This time he reached through the partially open driver’s window and pushed the button in the door which controls the up and down movements of the window. As the man struggled to lower the window, he told the driver that if she attempted to call the Police, he would shoot her. The man then reached for the cash that the driver had been counting.
In his effort to forcibly take the driver’s money, some of the cash fell to the floor of the cab. When this happened, the man reached further through the window and tried to pick up the money from the floor. At this point, the driver quickly put the cab into reverse and pressed on the accelerator pedal. The man held on to the cab as it began to back across the lot. After backing about 30 feet, the cab stopped and the man let go. He immediately took off running, last seen westbound towards the intersection of Court Street and Fayette Street.
Binghamton Police were notified and immediately responded to the scene. A search of the area failed to locate the suspect.
The cab driver was uninjured in this incident. No weapon was ever observed. The man escaped with an undisclosed portion of the driver’s money.
The suspect is described as a black male, dark skinned, about 5’6” tall, medium build, thick mustache, wearing a gray pullover hooded sweatshirt, black bubble jacket, dark pants and dark colored gloves.

Binghamton Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1000.00 for information which leads to the arrest and indictment of the individual(s) responsible for these crimes.
